Vicoprofen Overview
What is Vicoprofen?
Perhaps known by its generic components, hydrocodone and Ibuprofen, Vicoprofen is usually prescribed to treat acute pain for less than 10 days. As an anti-platelet, Ibuprofen does thin the blood, but this effect is short-lived and mild, which makes it a viable option for patients who are unable to use aspirin. Hydrocodone is an opioid and an analgesic, therefore, prolonged use could result in addiction and dependence. It is advised that you stop taking this medication when directed to do so by your doctor as taking it longer will most certainly result in a Vicoprofen addiction.
How is Vicoprofen Administered?
Vicoprofen is prescribed in bottles of 100 or 500 tablets with directions to take one every four to six hours orally. It is normally suggested that you not take more than five tablets a day. Read and follow all instructions on how to take this drug. When taking Vicoprofen, drink at least eight ounces of water with the tablet. For some patients, tolerance to this medication builds quickly, which means that your original dose no longer serves to relieve your pain. Consult your doctor if you suspect that your Vicoprofen dose needs to be adjusted, and do not alter it yourself unless you have been told to do so by your physician.
What Drug Interactions Should I Avoid When Taking Vicoprofen?
Prior to stopping any medication, you should first consult your doctor. However, your doctor will need to know about all other non-prescription medications, supplements and vitamins you are taking in addition to any other prescription drugs so that he or she can best determine what will be effective and safe for you. Some blood pressure medicines will cause an interaction as will antihistamines, anti-depressants, MAO inhibitors, tricyclics and other blood thinners. Narcotic painkillers are also advised against since taking hydrocodone with other opioids may result in an overdose. If you are taking any drugs that could cause drowsiness, combining them with Vicoprofen could increase this effect. Your pharmacist or doctor is able to assist you if you have any questions when taking this medicine.
What are the Side Effects of Vicoprofen?
Although rare, Vicoprofen can cause serious side effects in some patients. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, stiff neck, yellowing of the skin or eyes, rapid heartbeat, headache, ringing in the ears, difficulties with your vision or mood changes. In the event that you have persistent stomach or abdominal pain, black stools, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, go straight to the emergency room.
It is common for people who are using Vicoprofen to have symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, constipation, drowsiness or a mild headache. If you are uncomfortable with these side effects, speak to your doctor.
For a very few people, an allergic reaction may occur and present itself as difficulty breathing, itchiness or rash on the skin and severe dizziness.
What Else Should I Know When Taking Vicoprofen?
Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Vicoprofen is generally not administered to women who are pregnant in their last trimester since it may cause adverse effects to the fetus. If you suffer from drug allergies, nasal polyps, asthma, tell your doctor. For patients who have a history of brain disorders, stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, alcoholism, blood disorders, heart problems, kidney problems, lung disease or smoke, Vicoprofen could make these disorders worse. If you have missed your normal dose and are close to your next, skip the one you missed and continue with your next dose. You should not take more Vicoprofen than directed.
