Tramadol Overdose
Tramadol is an opioid-based prescription medication effective in the management of moderate to severe pain in cases like chronic back pain and fibromyalgia. Tramadol is habit forming when taken for a long period of time and, even when a tolerance is built up, it is still essential that you follow the prescription exactly to avoid overdose. An overdose can also occur if you mix Tramadol with alcohol, other opiate drugs or benzodiazepines.
As deadly as a Tramadol overdose can be, Meditox can help you avoid the risk altogether by providing you with a safe Tramadol detox and addiction treatment.
What are the Signs of a Tramadol Overdose?
The ability to recognize the signs of a Tramadol overdose is essential if you or someone you care about is taking the drug. Primarily, heavy, slow or labored breathing is an indication that a serious overdose has occurred. These symptoms may result in coma or cardiac arrest. Other signs of a Tramadol overdose include a drop in blood pressure, a weak pulse or stomach spasms. Any one or combination of these symptoms can suggest a Tramadol overdose.
What Do I Do in the Event of a Tramadol Overdose?
A Tramadol overdose is likely to be fatal if the victim does not receive emergency medical treatment in a timely manner. In the case of an overdose, you should contact the National Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. This number is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By calling, you will reach poison experts who can assist you with more information on your situation.
If breathing stops, it is especially important that you dial 911 to secure medical help. The best way to assist the paramedics is to give the 911 operator the following information:
- Patient's age, weight, and condition
- Strength of Tramadol tablet
- The approximate time it was taken
- The amount swallowed
- If the medication was prescribed for the patient
If you know where the bottle of Tramadol is located, be certain to bring it along to the hospital.
How is a Tramadol Overdose Treated?
Establishing an airway and commencing with CPR is the first order of business if the Tramadol overdose has affected the patient's breathing. Naloxone is routinely administered in opiate overdose victims to prevent respiratory depression. Depending upon the time of ingestion, activated charcoal or a laxative may be administered to flush the drug out of the body. In an extended-release Tramadol overdose, whole bowel irrigation may be necessary to remove the drug from the gastrointestinal tract. The patient will be closely monitored and supplied with oxygen and fluids throughout the process.
How Do I Avoid a Tramadol Overdose?
There are a number of things that you can do to help guard against a Tramadol overdose. If you are concerned that your Tramadol dose is no longer effective, do not adjust it without discussing it with your doctor first. Large doses of Tramadol may cause life-threatening breathing problems. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any prescriptions or over the counter medications with Tramadol. Some medications can cause serious adverse reactions. Typically, this drug should not be used with alcohol, antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines or general anesthetics.
