Subutex Treatment
Subutex and Suboxone have both been approved for treatment of opiate dependence. Each form of medication contains active ingredient buprenorphine hydrochloride which works to reduce symptoms of opiate addiction. This drug was initially licensed in the UK in 1998 and found to be safer and more effective than methadone for treatment of opiate users. Subutex is the brand name for a Schedule III sublingual formulation of buprenorphine, which received US FDA approval (DATA 2000) in October 2000.
DATA 2000 premise is to help destigmatize opioid treatment and to enable more doctors to add the management of opioid administration to their own practice. This greatly expands currently available treatment options and availability for individuals who would not or could not spend the time necessary to attend a methadone clinic.
