Subutex Overview

What is Subutex?

Subutex is the brand name for the drug buprenorphine, a partial agonist that is prescribed only to treat the withdrawal symptoms associated with narcotic dependence. Since its introduction, it has been a useful and effective tool in assisting those over the age of 15 who are ready to stop abusing and/or using opioids. Subutex is regulated by the FDA and is only available with a prescription by doctors who are certified to dispense the drug with a DEA identification number. Subutex does have the potential to be abused and should not be taken if you have a known allergy to buprenorphine or are currently taking a sodium oxybate.

How is Subutex Administered?

Subutex is chemically sensitive to how it is ingested and should never be injected into the body. It is dispensed in the form of a sublingual tablet, which you should allow to dissolve completely beneath your tongue. If you are required to take multiple tablets a day, up to two can be dissolved at the same time under the tongue. Under no circumstances should you ever crush the drug and ingest it or swallow it whole. Ask your doctor if you have any questions regarding your dose or the general use of Subutex.

What Drug Interactions Should I Avoid When Taking Subutex?

Your use of other prescription or over the counter drugs will need to be monitored by your doctor to guard against a drug interaction. Some drugs will exacerbate the side effects of Subutex. These include HIV protease inhibitors, macrolide antibiotics and azole antifungal medicines. Naloxone, rifampin and methadone will decrease the effectiveness of Subutex and your physician needs to know if you are prescribed any of these. Tell your doctor if you are taking narcotic pain medications, benzodiazepines, phenothiazines, and cimetidine or GHB medicines.

What are the Side Effects of Subutex?

Side effects may occur while taking Subutex and should be considered minor unless they become more severe or do not stop in a reasonable time. Constipation, headache, weakness, drowsiness and dizziness are the most often reported effects by patients. If you experience problems breathing or abdominal pain, tell your doctor as these may be signs of a serious problem. Subutex increases the chance of liver damage especially when taken for an extended period of time. If you suddenly develop vision changes, dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes, it is imperative you seek medical care immediately.

What Else Should I Know When Taking Subutex?

Your doctor may suggest lab tests to determine how Subutex is affecting you. You should not breast feed when using Subutex since your breast milk will contain the drug and be passed to the infant. Pregnant women should be advised that this drug may harm the fetus. Only use Subutex in pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Elderly persons may find that when using Subutex, side effects such as breathing problems or drowsiness will be more pronounced. Medical conditions that include thyroid issues, serious head injury, liver disease, brain diseases, lung disease, adrenal problems, alcoholism, gallbladder disease, psychiatric problems and spinal problems should be reported to your doctor before starting your Subutex treatment.
