Suboxone Rehab
Since 1914, when the federal government passed the Harrison Narcotic Act, treatment of opioid addicts was rigidly controlled. Prescribing opioids to addicts by helping them taper off their narcotic addiction to help ease the pain of withdrawal during their course of treatment by doctors and treatment centers has been considered illegal. Even though the Harrison Narcotic Act of 1914 was originally intended to be a tax act, the United States Supreme Court interpreted this law to limit treatment to opioid addicts.
The only exception to this law was the prescribing of methadone maintenance as treatment for addiction to opioids. Methadone is useful in blocking the effects of other opioids such as morphine, codeine and heroin as well as assisting the substance abuser to improve his or her ability to cope with life.
However, methadone maintenance as a substitute drug for opioid addicts has been tightly restricted by the federal government so that only specific clinics have been approved to provide this treatment. Unfortunately, all clinics are not equal in the level of care provided to addicts. In addition, one of the results of methadone use may be euphoria which can interfere with its effectiveness in the area of maintenance as well as for detoxification.
The Drug Abuse and Treatment Act of 2000 allows physicians to administer Suboxone - manufactured by Reckitt-Benkiser - which is an opioid antagonist (blocker). This drug is a tablet which is administered sublingually (under the tongue). Any attempt to inject this drug would result in the opioid aspect automatically being blocked.
Any doctor wishing to treat addicts may do so after completion of a specific instructional course on the protocol for Office-based Opioid Treatment. This course is given by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.
The Meditox Method is a program that uses Suboxone to help their clients safely and effectively withdraw and detox from their addiction to opioids.
