Prescription Pill Addiction

How Does Prescription Pill Addiction Occur?

Addiction to prescription medications most often starts innocently with a well-meant prescription from the family doctor. Controlling pain after a surgical procedure or injury is the intent of most of these prescriptions but even if the doctor's orders are followed exactly, most will become physically addicted to the drug prescribed.

Physical addiction to pain pill medication is characterized by the withdrawal symptoms that occur when the level of the drug in the blood stream drops below a certain level. These symptoms may include nausea and vomiting, insomnia, bone pain, restlessness and more. The danger of prescription pill use lies both in taking too much of the drug and ceasing to take it abruptly. Overdose can lead to unconsciousness, coma and death and depending upon the degree of the addiction and the amount of the dose, the cessation of prescription pills without medical supervision can be just as devastating.

With the help of Meditox, you or your loved one can find freedom from prescription medication addiction with the help of a physician trained in substance abuse and detoxification.

Which Prescription Pills are Addictive?

There are three classes of prescription medications that are most commonly abused including opioids, central nervous system (CNS) depressants and stimulants. Opioids are the deadliest group of addictive medications, and at Meditox we have a specialized treatment plan to help. If you or a loved one are addicted to any of the following medications, our drug detox program will most likely work for you:

  • Codeine and codeine combination prescriptions (i.e., oxycodone)
  • Fentanyl (i.e., Atiq, Duragesic, Sublimaze)
  • Morphine (i.e., Roxanol, Duramorph)
  • Opium (i.e., laudanum, paregoric)
  • Meperidine (i.e., Demerol)

Other opioid pain relievers include oxycodone, meperidine, hydromorphone, hydrocodone, and propoxyphene with brand names that include Tylox, OxyContin, Percodan, Percocet, Demerol, Dilaudid, Vicodin, Lortab, Lorcet, Darvon, and Darvocet. If any of these pose a risk to you or your family, Meditox can help.

How Do I Break an Addiction to Prescription Pills?

There are a number of drug treatment facilities available to help those who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Divided into two groups-behavioral and pharmacological-a program that combines aspects of both is generally the most successful, especially in the case of opioid pain killer addiction.

At Meditox we provide you with the pharmacological aspect of drug treatment by prescribing a drug called buprenorphine. One of two prescriptions, Subutex and Suboxone, will be yours after only one appointment at one of our offices. A Meditox doctor will give you a complete medical and psychological evaluation to make sure that our program is a good fit for you. Should you both agree to move forward, you will leave your appointment with your prescription and a treatment plan that could find you free from prescription pill addiction within six weeks. As you address the behavioral aspect in the privacy of your home, Meditox staff are on call for you around the clock should you need anything. If Meditox sounds like it might be right for you or someone you love, give us a call at 888-MEDITOX.
