Percodan Overview

What is Percodan?

After its introduction in 1950, Percodan was once one of the most widely used painkillers in the United States. A combination of oxycodone and aspirin, the drug is used to relieve pain that is moderate to severe and most commonly prescribed for post-operative pain management.

How is Percodan Administered?

Percodan is prescribed as oral tablets and taken every six hours without exceeding a maximum dosage of 12 tablets in a 24-hour period. Your dose will be decided upon by your healthcare professional and should be followed exactly as directed. Oxycodone is a very powerful opioid, and with regular use it is highly addictive. Your body may adjust to its pain-relieving properties, so if this happens, alert your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication unless your doctor has directed you to do so. If you suddenly stop using Percodan or lower your dose significantly, withdrawal symptoms due to Percodan detox will result. Do not consent to any type of surgery without your physician's knowledge of your Percodan use.

What Drug Interactions Should I Avoid When Taking Percodan?

Because Percodan contains aspirin, be sure that you do not take more aspirin in over the counter medications without consulting your doctor or pharmacist first. Your doctor will need to know if you are taking blood thinners, insulin, a NSAID, a bronchodilator, diuretics, acetazolamide, methotrexate, an ACE inhibitor or a beta-blocker. Herbal supplements and dietary aides may also cause a drug interaction. Be sure to tell your doctor of all medications and supplements you are using to prevent a serious medical condition. Do not start any new prescriptions unless your doctor knows you are also taking Percodan.

What are the Side Effects of Percodan?

Although generally mild, side effects may occur when you are taking Percodan. If you experience dry mouth, sweating, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, ringing in the ears, heartburn, nausea, upset stomach or constipation, these should not be reason for concern unless they become overwhelming or severe in intensity. Contact your doctor right away if you have any problems urinating, start to bruise easily, experience a rapid heart rate, or have stools that are bloody or black. These could be signs of a chronic problem. Do not use Percodan if you are allergic to either aspirin or oxycodone. An allergic reaction can be determined by abnormal swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, hives, or if you cannot breathe well. You should seek emergency medical attention if you suspect you are having an allergic reaction to Percodan.

What Else Should I Know When Taking Percodan?

Constipation is a common problem for those taking opioid-based painkillers like Percodan. You can relieve this by drinking six to eight glasses of water daily. Your doctor may be able to suggest different methods of adding fiber to your diet. Percodan is not to be used in children under 16. Percodan is normally prescribed to be taken as needed for pain, however, your doctor may have you dose on a regular schedule. If this is the case and you miss your dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you are closer to the time for your next dose than to the dose you missed, simply skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Taking more Percodan than directed may cause an overdose which can result in death. Never double your dose of Percodan. Alcohol is strongly advised against while using Percodan as it may increase certain side effects and cause internal bleeding.
