Pain Pill Abuse
"Pain - physical or mental suffering or distress, especially an unpleasant sensation arising from injury or disease." Merriam-Webster's Dictionary
The sensation of pain can occur in many ways and there are numerous ways to describe it: stinging, throbbing, pounding, sore, agonizing, splitting, unbearable....and many more. Pain gets our attention quickly and we immediately look for ways to get rid of it.
We all experience pain at some time whether it be acute pain which is short lived, lasting from a few seconds to a few hours to a few weeks. Acute pain goes away fairly quickly - either on its own or with medical treatment. However, millions of people suffer from chronic pain which can last for years or most of a person's life. This is the type of pain that can lead to depression, suicide or pain pill abuse.
Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen that are purchase over the counter relieve pain, fever and inflammation but only provide relief from mild to moderate pain. When the pain is more severe, the patient may need a type of pain reliever that is considerably stronger, which falls into the category of opiates.
Doctors are most likely to prescribe opiates when pain is severe and likely to last for a short period of time such as a few days to a week. Short term use of pain pills is less likely to lead to tolerance (loss of potency with repeated use of the drug) and dependency (pain pill abuse) or addiction). However, when the severity of the pain requires the use of pain relieving medication for more than a few weeks, the problem becomes more complex because this is when tolerance and pain pill abuse tend to develop.
The Meditox Method is a program that uses Buprenorphine (which is also known as Suboxone) to treat their patients who are suffering from pain pill abuse. This form of medication can help you become free of chemical dependency while continuing with your life style in your career, in school or as a homemaker.
