The Nature of Opiate Painkiller Prescription Medications
Though opiate painkillers are prescribed by physicians, opiate addiction is an insidious medical disease. Even short-term use of opioid-based prescription medications like Oxycontin, Vicodin, Hydrocodone, Percocet and many, many more can quickly lead to a physical dependence. Without a proper treatment and exit plan, use of these opiates can lead to the disease of drug addiction, a disease that can only be successfully treated medically.
The Effect of Opiate Painkillers on the Body
Over time, your body builds up a tolerance to your prescription painkillers, creating a physical dependence upon the drug. This physical dependence is defined by the need to maintain a certain amount of the prescription drug in the system at all times, a condition that produces opiate withdrawal symptoms should you suddenly stop taking your prescription. Withdrawal symptoms start within a few hours of your last missed dose and include nausea and vomiting, sweating, irritability, body and muscle aches, insomnia and increase in intensity over the next few days, lasting for weeks. Without a medical detox and/or Suboxone treatment like the one offered by Meditox, few are successful in breaking their opiate addiction alone because of the severity of detox and withdrawal without the proper medical assistance.
Why Prescription Opiate Painkillers Are Addictive
No one knows exactly why opiates are addictive. We know how dependence develops but we don’t know why. What we do know is that opiate addiction is treatable. With the drug buprenorphine, prescribed as Suboxone and Subutex, Meditox is able to provide an opiate addiction treatment that is available to those who want an effective alternative to drug rehab and would prefer not to take a trip to a maintenance clinic each and every day to receive their dose. Simple, efficient and successful: that’s the Meditox Method.
