Opiate Detoxification

Opiate detoxification can be a difficult process for anybody. Opiate addiction isn't just physical--it's psychological, too; the process of removing a drug from your system is going to put stress on both body and mind. There are a variety of treatment options available these days, so be sure to take stock of all your choices before committing to a course of action.

Until recently, the most common treatment was hospitalization, followed by inpatient rehabilitation. Twenty-eight day rehab programs have been, until now, the accepted protocol for treating addiction. They were a port in the storm to the addict who was drowning. Until recent medical breakthroughs in opiate detoxification, patients entered rehabs after detox for a month or more, followed the rules, and often succeeded in staying "clean" while inside.

Unfortunately, these centers have a relapse rate close to 85 percent. Abstinence from drugs or alcohol is never an easy task, but do-able within the defended walls of the "rehab" castle. Patients succeed inside, but when the drawbridge is lowered, dragons are waiting outside. Patients slip because they haven't mastered the tools to deal with the temptations that await them in the real world. That's why at Meditox, we only offer outpatient detox. By integrating your lifestyle with your opiate detox, you are less likely to relapse and more likely to find yourself permanently drug-free.

The difference in the Meditox approach to recovery is found in our core philosophy. We feel that drug rehabilitation isn't going to work when it interrupts your life, replacing it with an artificial protective environment. Recovery begins while you are detoxing from opiates. Meditox treats its patients with medications that can't be abused and that will remove cravings along with withdrawal symptoms, offering the patient protection as they get on with their lives.

You can go about your everyday life, feeling good about yourself, loving a life devoid of drugs during--not after--the opiate detoxification process. This technique is more effective than inpatient rehabilitation and the statistics bear that out. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal indicated an 85-95 percent success rate for patients following our method of opiate detoxification in conjunction with counseling and/or 12 Step work.
