Morphine Withdrawal

Wilhelm Sertumer, a German pharmacist, first isolated morphine from opium in the year 1805. However, the use of this drug did not begin to spread until the development of the hypodermic needle in 1853 when it was initially used for pain relief. It is provided to soldiers in dangerous military operations in wartime today in autoinjectors to be used to alleviate pain in medical emergencies.

This drug is addictive due to its ability to intensely activate the brain's reward systems, causing chemical alterations of the normal functioning of these systems. When an individual has been using morphine repeatedly over a period of weeks or months and then stops taking the drug, he or she will experience a number of withdrawal symptoms, including but not limited to the following:

  • cramps in stomach and muscles
  • hot and cold flashes
  • insomnia
  • nausea and vomiting
  • severe sneezing
  • goose bumps
  • restlessness
  • pains in back, stomach and legs
  • increase in blood pressure and heart rate
  • intense perspiration

Withdrawal symptoms will reach their peak of intensity in a period of 36 to 72 hours. If no treatment is provided, morphine addiction withdrawal symptoms will continue for approximately five to seven days. However, craving for this drug may continue for a number of months after cessation of use. Unfortunately, babies born to mothers who use morphine will experience withdrawal symptoms since this narcotic crosses the placental barrier.

The Meditox Method has been designed to safely and effectively help individuals addicted to morphine become drug free without experiencing the pain and suffering of morphine withdrawal. Hospitalization or confinement to a rehab facility is not necessary and patients are able to continue with their work or education while receiving individualized counseling from a team of experienced professional substance abuse clinicians.
