Morphine Addiction
During the American Civil War, morphine (named after Morpheus, the Greek God of Dreams) was used during surgery and provided to soldiers to alleviate pain. This drug was freely given to soldiers who were wounded so that they could self medicate after leaving the hospital and consequently, at the end of the Civil War, it is believed there were over 400,000 soldiers suffering from morphine addiction - which at that time was known as the "army disease".
Additionally, morphine was used as a cure for opium addiction and was also considered a recreational drug. It was easily accessible to all and was sold over the counter in drugstores and readily available through mail order. Morphine was also considered an appropriate substitute for alcoholism since it was believed that it was less physically destructive to the individual's body and did not cause the rowdy behavior attributed to alcoholics.
This drug may be ingested by tablet, by injection into a muscle or by injection into a vein (intravenously) as is the preferred method of use by most morphine addicts.
In reality, morphine is a highly addictive substance and morphine addiction develops quickly. This drug affects the user in a number of ways:

- expensive habit may cause user to turn to crime
Morphine addicts often have a decrease in energy which frequently causes job problems and problems in personal relationships. The morphine addiction becomes the most important part of the addict's life.
