The Need for Effective Drug Detox Treatment in Los Angeles

Based on data gathered at 29 hospitals in the Los Angeles area, there were almost 25,000 visits to the emergency room in 2002 that were related to drug abuse and addiction. The most common drugs to blame for these visits included heroin and narcotic painkillers. There were about 2525 emergency room visits based on heroin use and an almost equal number based on prescription pain relievers, but about half of the heroin-related visits included the use of other drugs as well.

Of those who came to an LA hospital suffering from a drug overdose, about 43 percent overdosed on prescription drugs. Over a three-year period, the number of people who headed to the emergency room in a Los Angeles hospital due to a Vicodin overdose increased by almost 50 percent, OxyContin overdose victims increased in number by 108 percent, and the number of methadone overdose victims increased by 63 percent. These rates of increase, high as they are, are only increasing each year.

Northern California seems to be partial to OxyContin and Vicodin, while southern California addicts generally prefer Demerol, Dilaudid, Vicodin and hydrocodone.
