Lorcet Overview

What is Lorcet?

Lorcet is an opioid-based prescription painkiller that contains a combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen. The hydrocodone in Lorcet works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and changing the way you perceive pain. The acetaminophen in the drug reduces the forming of prostaglandins, which also diminishes your experience of pain. Together, these drugs increase each other's effectiveness and are stronger than either one alone. Unfortunately, Lorcet is habit forming and can be abused. You should never share this medication with others, as an overdose is likely if not taken as directed. With continued use, your body can adapt to the drug requiring more and more to achieve the original pain relieving effects. Tell your doctor if Lorcet is no longer preventing pain so that he or she may adjust your dose as needed.

How is Lorcet Administered?

Your physician will decide how high your Lorcet dose should be in order to effectively manage your pain. Generally, this drug will be prescribed every four to six hours to be taken as needed. However, you should never take more than eight tablets in a 24-hour period as it can lead to a toxic overdose. Do not combine Lorcet with alcohol as the sedative effects of both combined can be fatal. A missed dose should be taken as soon as you remember unless you are closer to your next dose, in which case you should skip the dose you missed. Never use more Lorcet than directed by your doctor. If your current dose ceases to be effective, notify your physician.

What Drug Interactions Should I Avoid When Taking Lorcet?

Acetaminophen is one component in your Lorcet prescription and a common ingredient in many over the counter medications. Because taking large amounts of acetaminophen could have an adverse effect on your liver, you should ask your pharmacist before buying any nonprescription medications. In the same way, the drug carbamazepine could result in liver toxicity when mixed with Lorcet. Anti-anxiety drugs, anti-depressants known as tricyclics, MAO inhibitors, and tranquilizers may be unsafe to use while you are taking Lorcet. You may also experience a negative drug interaction when you take other narcotic drugs and antihistamines such as Tavist. It is recommended that you do not start or stop any medication, supplements or vitamins without your physician's consent.

What are the Side Effects of Lorcet?

Should you experience light-headedness, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, or sedation when you start taking Lorcet, know that it is normal and should pass as your body adjusts to the new medication. Although rare, some patients may develop a serious secondary response to Lorcet. Notify your healthcare professional if you are having a hard time breathing, experience a change in heart rate, or if your urine production changes. It is impossible to determine exactly what you may experience while using Lorcet. In the event that you become distressed by your symptoms, speak to your doctor.

What Else Should I Know When Taking Lorcet?

Be alert to any reactions you experience with Lorcet if you have a medical history of an underactive thyroid gland, Addison's disease, an enlarged prostate or urethral stricture. You should also tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, a severe head injury or if you have had any abdominal problems. Hydrocodone is a cough suppressant and is not advised for patients with lung disease. You may have received a list of precautions from your doctor. Always follow your physician's directives.
