Heroin Rehab

For most heroin users, it begins as a pleasurable, social activity and them progresses into a habit that is all consuming. After reaching this point, the addict's life centers around avoidance of withdrawal and craving for the drug and most addicts then seek a way out.

Detox alone is not sufficient to help users kick the habit. Treatment for dependency must address a number of factors: physical signs of addiction and craving for the drug as well as psychological, social and legal problems that result from continued heroin use. After these issues are addressed, those who are motivated to voluntarily seek help are likely to succeed in remaining drug free.

There are a number of ways that society has designed to help rehabilitate an individual who is addicted to heroin. One of the most well known is methadone maintenance which is beneficial in that the level of tolerance of users to any opioid is increased so that they will not get "high" if they use heroin while also taking methadone. However, methadone is a medication that will not cure heroin addiction and merely substitutes one form of dependency for another. In addition, the user's life is tied to the clinic until such time as he or she is able to detox from methadone - which may take years.

Therapeutic communities (or "TC's") are a form of inpatient rehab which requires the patient to commit to a program for a period of six to twenty-four months. The user receives rewards or penalties for conduct while learning to live without heroin by observing the behavior of peers and/or staff. As the patient becomes a more responsible member of the community, he or she is given more important "jobs".

TC's are very strictly administered and the patient's time is rigidly scheduled from "wake up" to "lights out". In addition, individuals are encouraged (and expected) to observe rule infractions committed by peers and report them to staff for punishment.

The Meditox Method is designed to allow patients to maintain their personal dignity while receiving a full course of individualized treatment lasting six weeks. Each patient receives one on one counseling from members of a team of highly skilled clinicians as well as medication that has proven to be safe and effective without causing dependency.

The patient is not required to be hospitalized or to spend precious time as an inpatient but is able to continue with his or her work or education while being assisted to become drug free.
