Darvon Overview

What is Darvon?

Although Darvon has been criticized in the past by consumers, it is still considered an effective analgesic to treat mild to moderate pain and safe when used exactly as directed. Most will develop a tolerance to this medication after normal use. If Darvon is no longer managing your pain as well as it did originally, you may need your doctor to adjust your dosage. It is not recommended to change your dose without your physician's approval. Using Darvon could result in an Darvon addiction if taken in large doses or for an extended length of time. Do not stop taking this drug unless your doctor directs you to do so. Withdrawal symptoms will most likely occur if you suddenly stop taking your Darvon prescription.

How is Darvon Administered?

Darvon is available in 65 milligram tablets that are taken orally. The drug is normally administered to treat pain as needed or every four hours with the maximum use of 390 milligrams per day. However, for patients who have liver or kidney damage, the recommended dose may be less. If you experience nausea while using Darvon, taking the pill on a full stomach may alleviate the problem.

What Drug Interactions Should I Avoid When Taking Darvon?

While you are on Darvon, you should tell your doctor exactly what other medications, vitamins and supplements you are taking or considering as reactions are possible. The following medications are known to cause serious issues and or side effects when taken with Darvon for some patients.

  • Anticoagulants
  • Carbamazepine
  • Antidepressant medication
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Barbiturate anesthetics
  • Cimetidine
  • Terfanadine
  • Naltrexone
  • Sodium oxybate

Drinking alcohol is also strongly advised against due to the risk of liver damage.

What are the Side Effects of Darvon?

It is impossible for your doctor to know every side effect you may experience while using Darvon. If you think that your reaction to Darvon is especially intrusive, you could have an allergy to the medication. Speak to your doctor if you are concerned. Constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness and an upset stomach are common ailments associated with Darvon use. Other symptoms may include nausea or vision changes. If you find that you are having anxiety, tremors and irregular heartbeats, confusion, low blood pressure, fainting or yellowing of the eyes or skin, this may be the prelude to a serious medical condition, and your physician should be informed immediately.

What Else Should I Know When Taking Darvon?

As with any drug, you should give your doctor a full medical history so that he or she can better determine whether or not Darvon will be an effective and safe drug for you. Some people should not use Darvon. Those who have liver or kidney disease, breathing problems, colitis or any other stomach problems could have severe side effects that may turn lethal in the presence of Darvon. Elderly persons may be more susceptible to side effects while taking Darvon.

Darvon should only be used as directed. In the event that you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not double your dose.
