Darvocet Overview
What is Darvocet?
Darvocet is a combination of acetaminophen and propoxyphene. One of the less powerful of the prescription opioids, Darvocet is prescribed to manage mild to moderate pain and sometimes administered to treat opioid withdrawals. Although Darvocet is considered a weak drug, it does have the potential to cause addiction and as such may cause withdrawal symptoms should you abruptly stop taking the medication.
What Drug Interactions Should I Avoid When Taking Darvocet?
Acetaminophen is an ingredient in a wide variety of over the counter medications and yet it can be dangerous in large amounts. Because Darvocet contains acetaminophen, you should avoid taking acetaminophen in the form of any other over the counter medications to avoid an overdose. If you are unsure of the contents in a medication, ask your pharmacist if it can be safely taken with Darvocet.
Additionally, aspirin and other blood thinners should not be taken with Darvocet. Irritable bowel syndrome, urinary and bladder medications could also cause adverse reactions. Darvocet may cause sleepiness so taking certain antihistamines, antidepressants or drinking alcohol may heighten this side effect.
The drug cholestyramine will decrease the acetaminophen effects of Darvocet, but you can still take the drug as long as you wait to take it at least three hours after your Darvocet dose or one hour prior.
The use of herbal supplements, dietary supplements and vitamins should also be discussed with your doctor before taking Darvocet. Some of these could cause a serious drug interaction.
What are the Side Effects of Darvocet?
Some individuals do experience side effects while using Darvocet. Serious side effects may include:
- Slow or shallow breathing
- Feeling lightheaded
- Fainting
- Confusion or bizarre behavior
- Seizures or convulsions
- Jaundice
- Clay-colored stools
- Dark urine
If you encounter any of the above-mentioned side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately since ignoring these signs may result in serious injury.
Mild side effects do occur frequently and include dry mouth, headache, blurred vision, dizziness and constipation. If these problems become more severe, you may want to discuss them with your doctor.
What Else Should I Know When Taking Darvocet?
If Darvocet is not taken exactly as directed, a Darvocet overdose is likely. If you suspect that you or someone else has overdosed on your medication, you can contact the National Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or emergency 911 services for further assistance.
Some people have reported an allergic reaction to Darvocet, therefore, you should tell your doctor if you have any other allergies or if you are concerned that you may be allergic to this drug. If you have a history of addiction to other drugs or alcohol you should not take Darvocet. Some users experience problematic breathing while taking Darvocet. If you have had asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the past, discuss this with your doctor. Do not take Darvocet if you currently have an enlarged prostate, kidney or liver disease or have taken medication for mood or mental issues. Women who are pregnant or who are likely to become pregnant are advised to avoid Darvocet unless medically necessary. You and your doctor can decide whether or not the benefits of taking Darvocet outweigh the risks.
Sharing your Darvocet prescription medication with others is illegal. It is important to keep this medication away from anyone who may abuse the drug and out of the reach of children who may accidentally overdose.
