Codeine Overview
What is Codeine?
Frequently prescribed for moderate to severe pain, codeine could possibly be the world's most well-known prescription drug. Although it has cough-relieving qualities, codeine is most often prescribed to manage chronic or acute pain, irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhea.
How is Codeine Administered?
In the United States, codeine is highly controlled and in order to obtain the drug, a prescription is required whether it is administered in liquid (as a cough elixir) or tablet form. Codeine tablets come in different strengths and can be divided into two halves with the exception of the 50 milligram pill. It is recommended that you take this medication with food.
Your doctor prescribed codeine for your personal medical condition, and therefore, you should not share your medicine with others. Due to its narcotic effects, codeine is habit-forming and should only be taken exactly as prescribed. Some physicians may provide codeine for use as needed to relieve cough or pain. Being cautious and careful to follow doctor's orders will help you avoid an overdose while using codeine. Be aware that if you take codeine for an extended period of time, your body may adapt to its presence, building up a tolerance. This can translate into addiction. Also, do not stop taking codeine without speaking first with your doctor as doing so may lead to symptoms of codeine withdrawal.
What Drug Interactions Should I Avoid When Taking Codeine?
Other drugs may interact with codeine adversely. Tell your doctor about all other painkillers and narcotics you are currently taking. You should also avoid sedatives, muscle relaxers and tranquilizers. Drinking alcohol while using codeine may impair your ability to concentrate and it may also cause serious drowsiness. It is best to abstain from alcohol while taking this medication.
There are many non-prescription drugs that could also cause a negative reaction when combined with codeine. It is important to check with your pharmacist before you begin taking any new supplements, vitamins or over the counter medications while you are taking codeine.
What are the Side Effects of Codeine?
Common side effects while using codeine include lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, sweating and vomiting. Although not as frequent, other symptoms may include euphoria, insomnia, stomach spasms, headache, dry mouth, constipation and weakness. If you are experiencing severe side effects, it may be possible to relieve them by lying down for a short time; just make sure you stand up slowly.
An allergic reaction such as skin rash or edema has been experienced by some taking codeine. If you suspect you are allergic, contact you doctor immediately.
What Else Should I Know When Taking Codeine?
You should not take codeine if you have suffered a head injury or are experiencing stomach problems. Codeine might prevent an adequate diagnosis of your stomach condition. Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse as using this medication may result in dependence.
For patients who have breathing problems such as asthma, sleep apnea or other breathing disorders, codeine may exacerbate these issues.
If you or someone you know overdose on codeine, it is imperative that you call poison control at 1-800-222-1222 or emergency medical services at 911. A large dose of codeine may result in the inability to breathe, seizures or coma and should receive medical attention immediately.
