Codeine Overdose

Codeine is one of the most commonly prescribed opioid-based medications for treating acute pain after an accident or a surgical procedure. Whether it is taken orally or injected, codeine is highly addictive after just a few weeks of treatment. However, should you abuse the drug by taking it more often than needed or in larger doses than prescribed, a codeine overdose is also a distinct possibility. If you are concerned that codeine addiction is putting you at risk of an overdose, Meditox can help.

What are the Signs of a Codeine Overdose?

The signs of a codeine overdose are difficult to miss. If you are overdosing on codeine, you'll know it. However, if you are with someone and are concerned that they have taken too much of the drug, here are the signs that you can look for:

  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Pupils are pinned (or tiny points)
  • Extremely shallow, slow or labored breathing
  • Blue-tinted lips and fingernails
  • Muscle or stomach spasms
  • Faint pulse

If the person is unconscious and can't be roused or if he or she goes into cardiac arrest after taking a large dose of codeine, then an overdose is the likely cause of their incapacitation.

What Do I Do in the Event of a Codeine Overdose?

If you suspect that you or someone else is overdosing on codeine, it is essential that you call 911 immediately. When you call, they will ask for information including details about how the overdose victim feels and is reacting in that moment. They will also want to know what drugs were taken, how much and when. If possible, have the prescription bottle handy when the paramedics arrive and take it with you to the hospital.

If you are concerned about yours or someone else's symptoms but are not sure whether or not it's serious, you can call the National Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. They will most likely ask for the same information as the 911 operator, so again, be prepared.

How is a Codeine Overdose Treated?

Should treatment be required, you can expect any number of things depending upon the severity of the overdose. Charcoal or a laxative may be given to help rush the drug out of your system if a stomach pumping-or gastric lavage-isn't deemed necessary. A dose of a narcotic antagonist may be necessary to kick the codeine out of your system, usually naloxone. Fluids may be given intravenously and heart rate, blood pressure and breathing monitors may be brought in as well. In the best scenarios, recovery can occur within 24 hours.

How do I Avoid a Codeine Overdose?

When your doctor prescribes codeine, make sure that he or she is aware of all other drugs, vitamins and supplements that you are taking. Codeine can cause complications with other co-occurring diseases or disorders and certain other drugs can increase its effect and cause an overdose even if you take it as directed. If you begin taking a new medication or supplement, inform your doctor immediately. Also, limit your alcohol consumption while taking codeine as this can significantly increase its effect and cause an overdose.

If you feel that you are addicted to codeine and continuing to take it is not worth the risks, then seeking treatment is the most efficient way to avoid overdose. Meditox provides an outpatient treatment that will help you detox off of codeine in as few as six weeks.
