World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day? No, it’s not a holiday or that will get you out of school or work. You’ll still get your mail and the banks will be open. What it is, is a day that the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) has initiated to help raise public awareness of issues in the mental health world. As a substance abuse counselor, it became clear that addictive behavior—like drug addiction—is one of the biggest issues of mental health that affect millions of people to some degree.
You know that feeling after you’ve gotten high once or twice? That little thought that maybe you’d like to get loaded again, a thought that turns into a feeling and soon becomes what you look forward to, then what you choose over work or school and then the first thing you think about when you wake up and the goal that drives everything you do throughout the day? That’s addiction and that little thought-turned-feeling is a mental health issue.
Even if you’ve never heard of World Mental Health Day, it’s as good an excuse as any to make today, October 10, 2007, the day you quit using drugs and sign up for an treatment program (outpatient or inpatient) with a medical opiate detox. Huge leaps in medicine and legislation have made drugs like buprenorphine available to those who prefer to kick drugs at home rather than in front of strangers. There’s really no good reason not to.
