VH1’s New Celebrity Reality Show, Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew Tonight
VH1 has a new celeb reality show that premieres tonight: Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew. If you’re a fan of VH1 or reality TV, you may already be familiar with Dr. Drew Pinsky. He’s been on the radio, MTV’s Loveline and CNN’s Strictly Sex With Dr. Drew. He’s also a writer/researcher/addictionologist and he’s bringing all that expertise to the world of B- and C-list celebrities with a problem with substance abuse and a penchant for the camera.
The series will follow Brigitte Nielsen, Mary Carey, Jeff Conway, Chyna Doll, Jessica Sierra, Seth “Shifty” Binzer, Jaimee Foxworth and Daniel Baldwin as they tackle their chemical dependency issues in front of the camera. But it’s not an exploitation-fest, at least that’s not what the producers and Dr. Drew are going for. Granted, people who are loaded act ridiculous and when a camera is there to capture the shenanigans, it can be a little embarrassing later on. Embarrassing for them, but perhaps also a good lesson to those who watch and would prefer not to follow in their footsteps.
What does Dr. Drew consider the goal of the show? He says, “We want to show people what this really is so people can understand how it should go down if they’re not getting good treatment, and for people contemplating treatment, hopefully it will encourage them.”
The primary lesson of the show, in my opinion, is not the fact that the people profiled are celebrities but that drug addiction can attack anyone. No amount of money or fame will protect you or change the physiological fact that drugs are addictive. In fact, Dr. Drew has spent a great deal of time writing and researching the link between celebrity and addiction: “I’ve done the only scientific research done on [celebrity and drug addiction], and we were able to show that people with pathology desire to be celebrity. People come to their celebrity status already with the pathology. I think you see that the issues that are very commonly underlying most celebrity personality structures on this show: the trauma, the addiction, the abandonment, the abuse. All of that is an exceedingly common history in people that strive to be celebrities.”
For most people, those who don’t strive to be celebrities and still find themselves saddled with addiction, especially those who became addicted to prescription painkillers unwittingly, these types of shows open the door to a world wholly different from their own. For those who don’t require inpatient drug rehab like that depicted on the show, outpatient treatment is available in the form of Suboxone, a pill that combines buprenorphine for drug addiction treatment and naloxone for discouraging relapse.
Without putting yourself in the spotlight in front of your family, neighbors and coworkers, you can get the treatment you need for opiate drug addiction by calling Meditox. Only doctors who are specifically certified to prescribe buprenorphine can get you a prescription for this drug addiction treatment, but Meditox is fully staffed with doctors who will not only give you a full evaluation and determine your eligibility for the treatment, but help you to create a personalized treatment plan to take home with you and follow as you take the drug.
