Pros and Cons of Outpatient Drug Detox
Outpatient drug-free treatment is a broad term that covers any program that offers assistance to those trying to quit using drugs, including alcohol, marijuana, heroin, speed and meth, cocaine and crack, and painkiller medications like OxyContin and Vicodin. Some require a high time commitment, as long as eight hours a day of classes and groups while others require no time commitment beyond one appointment to create a treatment plan, like Meditox.

Depending upon your situation, the pros and cons of outpatient drug-free treatment will vary. If you don’t have a job or a family to attend to, then eight hours a day in treatment may be just what you need. However, if you are a professional and/or have a family, then you most likely have too many responsibilities to field to get involved with too many additional time commitments.
One thing that is glaringly missing from most outpatient treatment programs is a medical detox. Most require that you be completely “clean” or drug free before you start treatment. For those who are trying to detox off of painkiller medications, that can be a problem. If you need help medically detoxing off of prescription pills and would like the structure of a treatment plan without the time commitment of classes and group sessions, an outpatient drug treatment program can help you achieve both.
