National Institute of Health Wins An Emmy

Nov 13th

Emmy for Addiction documentaryActually, not one Emmy but two for the documentary series called “Addiction” on HBO. The 14-part series has garnered lots of attention, not just from the media moguls but from addicts, friends and family members of addicts and substance abuse counselors.

Dr. Nora Volkow is the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, one of the agencies at NIH honored for the documentary, and she accepted the award saying, “I want to thank the Academy for its recognition, and HBO for its vision in developing this project, which has allowed us to reach millions with our message-that addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease. It does not care if you are rich or poor, famous or unknown, a man or woman, or even a child. If science-based treatment principles are followed, addiction treatment can work, and people can reclaim their lives.”

The series focuses on the science of addiction, how it can be treated, how addicts recover both in and out of rehab, and the many different ways that drug addiction is costly to the community and to the families of addicts in addition to the addicts themselves.

There are more than 23 million Americans who are addicted to drugs but only 10 percent are getting the treatment they need. If you are one of them and addicted to opiates, there’s really no reason to continue living in addiction. You can do an outpatient program that treats your physical addiction without having to stay overnight or show up every day for classes, group meetings and other required sessions. Subutex and Suboxone allow you to detox from home but you can only get the prescription from a certified physician like the ones at Meditox. So call. Make an appointment. Get your prescription and quit the slave mentality that keeps you hooked on painkillers, heroin, morphine, Norco, Vicodin, OxyContin, Percocet, Percodan, Lorcet, Lortab, Codeine….
