Is Medical Detoxification Necessary?

Jul 18th

Medical detoxification is a way of slowly breaking your addiction to opiate-based prescription drugs like Vicodin, Methadone, OxyContin and more. It used to be that you had to be enrolled in a residential treatment center or outpatient drug clinic in order to get medication prescribed to you to help assuage the withdrawal symptoms that often come with detox. Now that buprenorphine is available and approved for drug treatment from a doctor’s office setting, having to decide between a treatment center and trying to wean yourself off opiates is no longer an issue.

Trying to detox off of an addictive drug without the assistance of medication is a recipe for failure. It’s hard enough to handle the desire to take the pills without having to deal with painful bone and muscle aches and constant nausea. This physical discomfort can be so intense that the basic desire to continue to taking the pills can be blown up into an obsessive compulsion that can’t be controlled. Medications like Suboxone and Subutex, the brand names for buprenorphine, can handle the physical symptoms of withdrawal and allow you to break your addiction without the symptoms that can keep you home from work and pacing around the house, a sick, irritated insomniac.

Suboxone treatment and Subutex treatment lets you continue to live a normal life—going to work, driving the kids where they need to go, taking care of bills—without the pain of withdrawal symptoms. It’s really a no-brainer.
