Vicki,
Have you gone back to your pain management doctor yet, to tell him/her that you are experiencing more pain? I feel for you. I've been on the same dosage for 5 years, minus the break-thru medicatioin, OxyIR that they took away from me. It was a self-proclaimed female doctor in P.F.,(Calvert County,MD),who took it away. I found out that she claims to be a specialist in amputation, neurobiofeedback, and so much more. She is not even a licensed pain management physician, only a Physical Medicine physician. She cannot even tell the difference between sedation from a medication that I was taking for at least 6 years and not sleeping for 2 or 3 nights.

I hope you have a "good" pain management doctor. I would say you have a good start if they will prescribe oxycontin. It is so hard to find a pain management doctor that will even think about prescribing it unless you've been on it for a while and can prove it.

If you have not spoken to the doctor yet, do not complain too much because then they can say that the oxycontin is not working for you and they can and will take you completely off of it. I would tell them that you have new pain or breakthrough pain. Don't let them give you methadone, demoral, percocet or it will kill your liver. The purest form of an opiod available is oxycontin.

I was talking with the new patient advocate from the American Pain Foundation. Boy what a conversation. This is such a battle just to be able to live with dignity or like a human being. I believe that a dog that has been hit by a car, gets treated better than humans in pain do! People are starting to believe that the oxy crisis is political. Perdue pissed someone off. I bet the Pain Foundations get to the bottom of it.

I am becoming bed-bound myself, due to new pains that I've never had. I don't know how you feel but I can say that I can imagine. I remember years ago when I would cry because I thought that I was in the worst pain that was possible. Now I look back and wish I was still living with only that pain!

It is so hard to believe that every year there are billions of oxycontin prescriptions written and trillions of dollars spent on it, but the people that it works for, or need it, cannot get it legally. I know of pain patients that have to buy it off of the streets from these young punks that steal it from their parents, grand-parents, probably neighbors,etc.. That makes me so fricken angry that this is not monitored better. If there is a large amount on the streets, the police know who is prescribed oxycontin and in what amounts. I would not be surprised if they knock on my door one day, and ask me for a pill count as my physician can. It is all because of these punks that don't want to do a hard days work, instead they want to take the road well-traveled, and steal the meds and kill people that are not tolerant to the med. I'm afraid of what I would do if I ran into one of these people. Where I live it is mostly young kids, late teens early twenties.

Hope you have had some type of increase of break-thru meds prescribed to you. If you need the name of a pain managemet physician that prescribes high doses, but responsibly, I can give you a name or two.

God Bless,
Kendra

Dear Vicki,
I know about hyperalgesia. It is what pain management doctors tell you that you have when they do not want to prescribe you a higher dosage.
Nobody should be bedridden with no quality of life as it sounds that you are.
How long have you been taking 40mg - 3 times a day? If it has been a while, a year give or take, you may have tolerance or more pain from your current condition or something new. Don't ever overlook pain just because it is numbed. If you are having more pain or a new pain, tell your doctor. The hyperalgesia is when your nerve endings are over-sensitized from the narcotics but that is still a theory.
I have a co-worker who is an anesthesiologist. He has seen children on oxycontin, in the several thousands of mgs a day and they are functioning and have quality of life even while they are dying. Some physicians just do not care. It is only when they come across a personal relationship when someone has to take a strong pain medication do they change their outlook on the medication. Especially oxycontin. I do not know why the DEA does not go after, or bad mouth,Duragesic or the Fentynal patch. That is stronger than oxy and it lasts 3 days. People that abuse it, then take the left-overs and dry it and smoke it for what they say is an incredible high. Maybe it is political.

I would keep on your doctor and tell him/her that you have become tolerant, if you are, and if he/she is a true pain manageement doctor they will understand that you are not an addict, your tolerant. Good Luck.

Cheryl Gregory:

How do you know if I am a talkative patient on medications or someone else? You cannot tell anything about me by what I wrote and I find it funny that you think you can. Is there a limit on what a person can post on this site? I also find it funny that you do not know the first thing about opoides. There is always one bad apple that has something derogatory to say about someone that they do not even know. Keep up the good work with your God-send Methadone that works for you. Who are you to say that one drug works better for all? Everyone is different obviously. Look at the posts. If you do not have nothing nice to say, Cheryl, please keep it to yourself. If you reply, then you are just a miserable person with no life that goes on chat groups, etc., and harrasses people.

I have been reading up on opiate addiction. I have rheumetoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. But I seem to be having more pain as time goes by. They haven't increased my dosage (40 mg.) three time a day and I may just have a tolerance but I hurt so bad I can physcially do nothing without laying in bed for a day or so. I have read that certain people experince pain from being on painkillers for awhile. Has anyone else experienced this. I almost feel like something is killing me because the pain is so bad. The article said you can tell by switching opiates. I don't know but I wish I could stop the pain because I am only 45 and I feel that my life is over. I can't do anything I use to enjoy without paying like crazy.

Kendra's message shocked me, she says no one could tell she takes that much oxycontin a day, but I can tell just by reading her rambling comment. I take methadone for pain management. One time per day. I believe it is a wonder drug. I think more doctors should drop the oxy and prescribe more methodone. It is much better on your body, and has a longer life than that of any of the other opiates. Thank You. Cherolyn Gregory
