Finding The Right Drug Addiction Treatment

When you’re ready to break your addiction to prescription painkillers, the first decision you’ll make is what kind of treatment to start. If you’re addicted to an opiate, you have a number of choices:

  • Agonist maintenance treatment
  • Narcotic antagonist treatment using Naltrexone
  • Outpatient drug-free treatment
  • Short-term residential treatment
  • Long-term residential treatment
  • Medical detoxification

The best treatment for professionals who find themselves addicted to prescription medication after an injury or surgery is to be given a chance to get back into the swing of things at work and at home. Treatment of some kind, of course, is necessary but most demand a serious time commitment that no one with a job—much less a career—will be able to invest.

No residential treatment will allow the freedom to return to work. Most even require a certain amount of time before you can even write a letter home, much less catch up on what your pill addiction may have made you lose at your job. Maintenance treatments, too, will only prolong your detox off your medication and interfere with your schedule.

The only treatment that will allow a full detoxification for a professional with a family and responsibilities is an outpatient drug-free treatment that provides for a medical detoxification. The advent of Subutex, pure buprenorphine, and Suboxone, buprenorphine and naloxone, allow you to methodically and safely detox off your prescription medications while you enjoy the freedom to go about your life.
