Find Support at The Second Road During Suboxone Detox

Apr 27th

Support During Opiate DetoxMy last post discussed ways to get through an NA meeting when you’d rather be anywhere but sitting in a metal folding chair listening to other addicts. This was based on another post about finding support wherever you can when you’re on a Suboxone detox.  However, Erin of What Winners Do commented that as an organization, Narcotics Anonymous isn’t known for embracing those who are on any kind of medical maintenance (like methadone) or medical detox (like Suboxone), and she’s right. In an effort to come up with new ways to help people find the support they need, I turned to my own support system, the online world of bloggers who share their day-to-day struggles in recovery and The Junky’s Wife provided a valuable resource: The Second Road.

The Second Road is a free online service where people who are struggling with recovery—whether it’s their own sobriety or that of a loved one—can find each other. Everyone shares their stories no matter what ideology they are currently following, so that you can find a little bit of every method and every stage of recovery represented here. In other words, no one will judge you if you’re on Suboxone.

The Second Road mission describes themselves as:

TheSecondRoad.org is a Charlottesville, VA based not-for-profit to help those in recovery (and the families of those affected by addiction) learn to live with the challenges presented by everyday life and continue on a fulfilling road of recovery. TheSecondRoad.org realizes that for those trying to stay clean and sober, the often inadequate treatment “after-care”; the daily struggle of living in trigger-filled environments; the lack of connections to individuals with the same cultural or experiential backgrounds; and the fear, shame and/or inability to reach supporters when feeling most hopeless often makes the recovery process daunting and the notion of staying in recovery unattainable.

By offering a community of trust and understanding; 24 hour access; inspiring stories from people of diverse cultures and backgrounds; the knowledge of many experts in the addiction treatment field; and the tools to resist relapse, all in a secure, non-threatening environment, TheSecondRoad.org offers a revolutionary way to communicate, interact, learn, and live.

You can set up an account, create your own page, keep a journal, join chat groups and upload recovery videos. It’s kind of like MySpace for addicts and their families and has the potential to offer a number of inroads to support of all kinds.

Does anybody have any experience with this site or have any other resources for support they they’ve found helpful?

Many methadone anonymous meetings accept bupe patients as well, and there has been talk of changing the name to make it more inclusive. They usually meet in clinics but are opne to all comers.
