Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Using Subutex…But Didn’t Know To Ask

blue-and-whitesb20.jpgSubutex, the brand name for buprenorphine, is prescribed for opiate detox and opiate addiction treatment. For those who suffer from an addiction to prescription pain medications like Darvocet, Fentanyl, morphine, codeine and more, Subutex in addition to a personalized treatment plan can help you break your physical dependence upon your prescription painkiller without experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

How To Take Subutex

Subutex is what’s known as a sublingual tablet, which means that to take it, you place it under your tongue and let it dissolve completely. If your dose calls for too many pills to take all at once, let them dissolve two at a time underneath your tongue. Many doctors will prescribe Subutex for just a day or two and then switch you to Suboxone, a sister medication which provides the same effects as well as an agent called Naloxone that works as a deterrent against abusing the drug. Whether you are prescribed Subutex for two days or two years, try to take it at the same time every day to keep the levels of the drug even in your body and to help you remember to take it.

How Not To Take Subutex

There are a few don’ts when you’re taking Subutex. Like, don’t try to chew or swallow the pills as they won’t be as effective. Don’t skip a dose, decrease your dose, share your medication with anyone else or stop taking the medication against the advice of a doctor: you could go into heavy withdrawal symptoms that can be devastating and, in some cases, fatal. On the other hand, it is just as dangerous to increase your dose, supplement the medication with other drugs or take Subutex longer than you and your doctor outlined in your treatment plan.

A Few More Notes on Subutex Treatment

* Inform all of your medical doctors including dentists, your family physician, emergency room professionals and specialists that you are taking Subutex to avoid potentially dangerous, conflicting prescriptions. You may need occasional check-ups to check internal organ function if you remain on the drug for a long time.

* Store your bottle of Subutex at room temperature and away from bright light or moisture: no bathroom medicine cabinet for this med. Also, keep it away from children and out of sight of teenagers who may seek to abuse it.

* If you miss a dose, don’t double up. If you remember closer to the next dose than to the time that you should have taken it, just wait and take your regular dose of Subutex at the next dosing time.
