Celebrity Drug Rehab Profile: Chyna, AKA Joan Marie Laurer

Feb 2nd

chyna - joanieIn the ring, she’s known as Chyna, but in the world of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab, she’s better known as Joan or Joanie. In her former life, she was considered “The Ninth Wonder of the World” (Andre the Giant being the eighth). However, with Dr. Drew Pinsky and the rest of the celebrities undergoing drug rehab, she can’t decide whether or not she’s actually an alcoholic and addict. This ambiguity, although unexpected in this context, is common in rehabs across the country.

Joanie Laurer is nothing if not a well-studied adventuress. She’s multilingual and has served in the Peace Corps, even penning a bestselling autobiography, If They Only Knew, that hit #2 on the New York Times Bestseller list. She’s also a groundbreaker in the world of wrestling: the first and only woman to win the Intercontinental Championship as well as a four-time title holder in the WWF Women’s division. She’s also an actress and a model; her pictorial is responsible for one of the top five bestselling issues of Playboy in history.

When it comes to rehab, however, Joanie is ambivalent. She tells Dr. Drew in one session that her week in rehab has revealed to her that she is not an addict at all. On the other hand, she later confesses that she feels that if change does not begin here in the Pasadena Recovery Center, then it will never come at all.

This feeling is not uncommon among those in treatment or contemplating treatment, especially among those who are addicted to prescription opiate medications. They’re not sure if they are an addict, if they need treatment, or if their use is at all threatening to themselves or anyone else. Though this certainly doesn’t apply across the border, chances are that if you think you’re use of prescription painkillers or other drugs is dangerous, then yes, you are an addict. And if you are an addict, then yes, you need treatment.

Suboxone is one treatment that can help those who prefer the anonymity of an outpatient treatment that allows them to continue their regular schedule at work and at home. Rather than checking into an inpatient center that requires a long-term time commitment and a leave of absence from work, a Suboxone detox allows you to keep up with your responsibilities while maintaining your anonymity. A consult with a Meditox doctor will help you determine whether or not you are a candidate for the treatment.
