Big Surprise: Inhibitions Lowered During Drug Use

Nov 18th

drug addiction lowers inhibitionsBetcha didn’t know that, huh? Anyone who’s had a few too many over a dinner meeting, a family reunion or an office party knows all too well how the filters between the brain and mouth and the brain and actions can shrivel into nothing when doused with alcohol. Throw in a few prescription painkillers, a line of coke or other “recreational” drugs and not only are you in for a night of uncensored action but the strong possibility that it will be wrapped in a blackout as well.

So the scientific study that now makes what everyone already knows an evidence-based fact was based on the measurement of time between when people first began to do something and when (and if) they stopped themselves from doing it. How does this affect you?

Believe it or not, if you have an addict in your life and you’re trying to use common sense to convince them that perhaps their use is affecting their reputation in negative ways, you know have someone backing you up. Many people who are addicted to opiates, especially those who are addiction to prescription painkillers, don’t believe that it is really a problem or even that anyone but them knows what is going on. You, of course, know that that’s not true, but how do you convince someone who needs help to get it when you can’t even convince them that their use is as obvious as their hair color?

The “fix-it” for their physical dependence on opioid-based drugs like Vicodan, Percodan, Percocet, OxyContin and other opiates doesn’t have to be so obvious. With an outpatient Subutex/Suboxone treatment, breaking their addiction can be a lot more low-key than their current state of using.
