I look at it like Methadone is the last liferaft left on a sinking ship and it would be more advisable to try other alternitives first before thinking about methadone, especially long term maintenaince. It's so addictive and hard to kick, that thinking of kicking it has kept me in active heroin addiction again since I kicked it again in Febuary. I was on it for 7 years last time and to say withdrawls were horrible would be an understatement. I've been a heroin addict for 30 years or more and when I was younger could never stay in treatment more then a week, if that, because I really didn't want to stop. I just didn't want to be sick anymore, and as soon as I'd feel better I'd be craving more misery. I REALLY want to STAY STOPPED now. That's why I'm running back down to the methadone clinic on the 1st of September. Also, Methadone IS NOT dangerous to your teeth, it causes dry mouth which in turn can affect your teeth because your saliva helps battle bad bacteria in your mouth that rots your teeth. And almost all drugs are bad for your liver, especially the street heroin we use. Methadone is that liferaft for me and the good definitely outweighs the bad - in my situation. Being at a clinic is more then a Bitch but if that is what it takes to save my life then so be it!!!

Hey, Maury. Yeah, it's definitely better not to be on anything, including methadone, if you can help it, but if it works and you're in a place where the methadone clinics are a little less packed, then it's a good thing at least for awhile until you feel stable and strong. I agree that it's a step in the process and not the end result for most.

I've been on Methadone for a year and a couple of months. I was a junkie on and off for around 5 years (more on towards the end) and doing about 100 to 200 dollars worth of smack a day before I quit.
when I started it was at 115. Which I thought was high but now i'm meeting mother fuckers on at 200 to 250. Some scamming multiple clinics (very easy to do).
Heres my thing. Yes "statisticly" your 80% likely to fail if you dont stay one for 5 or more years right?
Well how bout you dont be a pussy. Once I stopped using heroin on top of the done (what they call a double habit) I let myself adjust. That took around a month. To feel o.k. at night without the extra heroin on top of the methadone. Then a few months later I started to go down. 10% every other week is what I would recomen. That means if your doing 100 Milis you go down 10 milis to 90 milis right. But then when you are at 50 milis you only go down 5 milis....follow...easy right. After you get down below 40 milis you may want to go down only 2 miligrams (only 5%) because the difference starts to be more noticable. And there is no rush. But fuck you dumb asses that are buying this shit that are clinics are trying to sell us that over all your better if you stay on for years and years. Cuz in addition to the amount you have used in your life of any one opiate the length of time you take that amount affects your withdrawl/weening. See these clinics are just drug ddealers. Im sure your counsler believes the crap that the doctor that owns your clinic has fed them to feed you. But your doctor knows its bullshit. The shit is still poison. In fact more so than heroin if you dont factor in the adulterants. Its more physically addictive and its more damaging to things like your teeth, and your liver. You gotta get right with your heart... go to a 12 step meeting that is understanding of your replacement use or see a threpist. But you must approach it like its the last step in your final battle to walk away from it forever. If not whats the point??? Sure your not going to go to jail. And you wont O.D. but it will still do enough damage to your body to kill you a few years earlier. And you never really walk away from the lifestyle and the people till your not trapped going to a hang out where theres a hundred other junkies EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!
Use all the methadone you need to get away from heroin... it is better. But use it to escape the maze. Not find a more confusing one to get out of.

Hi, Ashley. The answer is: it might. It depends on how much methadone you take every day. If you're at a blocking dose or, really, anything above about 30mg of methadone (some doctors say 40mg, others prefer 25mg; it depends), you'll need to taper down in order to be successful with Suboxone addiction treatment.

If you'd like more information on Suboxone and your options, you can call a counselor at Meditox for some solid advice and info. It's free and it could really help you figure out what to do next!
